homeschool mother's journal [october.26.2012]

In my life this week. . .

Andy was traveling again. Just a quick trip this week, though. I am thankful that he won't be traveling for the next several weeks. But we never know, sometimes unexpected trips just pop up. For the rest of the family that didn't go anywhere, a family that had lived here and then moved away was back visiting.

In our homeschool this week. . .

We started a mini-unit on the presidential election. As we started this, I realized that NONE of my children knew the national anthem. They had a vague idea of the title of the song, but no clue of the lyrics. This is would be one of the side of effect of living outside the US for the past 4 years! I am not sure that they have ever even heard it. So we found a version of the song online and listened to it. I think we might play it over the next couple weeks to learn it. The kids are each making a lapbook, but with a twist. File folders are about impossible to find here. I was brainstorming ways to get around this. I thought about stapling cardstock. But I finally had an idea. . . since getting things bound is fairly cheap (around a $1 to spiral-bound something), I had several pieces of cardstock bound together. They are creating a book out of this. I will post some pictures of the completed project.

Places we are going and people we are seeing. . .

With our friends visiting for the week, we had a couple days of lighter school. And one day of no work whatsoever. Instead, they spent the entire day outside with two of their best friends. I am not sure when we will see these dear friends again, so it was wonderful to take the time and just enjoy being with them.

Tori and Elise enjoying some popsicles we had made from grape juice. Notice that we are still wearing shorts and t-shirts. I LOVE Suzhou in the fall!

But as far as going, we stayed fairly close to home. In fact, there were several days when we did not leave the neighborhood. Overall, a low-key, good week.

My favorite thing this week was. . .

Writing a story with Tori. She is such a creative child. I love seeing her thoughts and ideas flow. I honestly never know what will come out her mouth! And sometimes her thoughts shock me. The other day after we had visited a local orphanage, she said: "I wish I was an orphan." Huh. Really?
Come to find out, she liked the toys and thought that as an orphan, she could do whatever she wanted. Which prompted an interesting discussion.

Things I'm working on. . .

Knitting a blanket for our new arrival and organizing several piles that are rapidly turning into mountains.

I'm cooking. . .

Anything with sweet potatoes and pumpkin! While our weather is not quite as fall-like as the midwest, I have been in the mood for anything resembling fall foods. Thankfully, all of those fall veggies I love are also found here at the market, with a few unique ones as well. I have made pumpkin bread and soup. Yesterday I found purple sweet potatoes at the market that I am eager to try.

I'm praying for. . .

The election, our adoption (and this piece of paper that is taking FAR too long), our kids, our families back in the US, and the many children who are waiting for their forever families. [November is adoption awareness month...  ]
