A (Almost) Surprise Birthday

Monday was Andy's birthday. I thought it would be fun to make a cake and bring it to his office as a surprise. I contacted several of the managers to work out the details. Everyone was excited to surprise the boss. Little did they know that at the end of last week, Becca inadvertently spilled the beans. At dinner one night, she said she was making things for his birthday and that I was going to make a huge cake. Becca then got a look of "Uh-oh" on her face. We all laughed and I told Andy to act surprised. What do you think, I think he did a good job of it . . . .
I made a HUGE cake. 3 layers and it was 2 entire cake recipes. For the bottom layer I used my deep dish pizza pan (about 12-15 inches across) and I made a yellow cake. But for the top 2, I made Andy's favorite chocolate cake. I wondered if the people would like the chocolate because most Chinese don't like really sweet things. Surprisingly, more people wanted the chocolate! As you can see, nothing was left of the cake. I don't think I have ever made a cake for 40 people! :-)

  2. Thanks! I wasn't totally happy with the cake because I couldn't find powdered sugar. Apparently, there are many different grades of sugar here but none of them were fine enough. The icing was good, just a little gritty!
