Summer is exciting. Time with the kids. Time to refresh. And for us, it is a time to be with our friends and family. (Not to mention all the little joys of being in our home country).
We are usually fairly purposeful about where we are and what we will be doing. Especially planning for the big things. But this list is more than just the big trips. It is all the things that we want to soak up and not take for granted while we are Stateside. So, in a stream-of-consciousness-kind-of-way here are my dreams for the summer.
1. Eat berries every day. Strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries. I am not going to look at the price tag. Because no matter what I will pay, it will be way cheaper than here. Not to mention some of those fruits are not available
ever here.
2. Eat corn on the cob, often. Maybe not every day, but close. Because midwest corn is some of the best on the planet. In my humble opinion.
3. Walk barefoot in the grass. There are many reasons that this one is a must. We live in a city of 7 million and grass is hard to find, and when you do find it often you are not allowed to walk on it. And then I would never, ever go barefoot in China. Ever. I will let your imagination fill in the blanks on that one.
4. Eat ice cream at least 3 times a week. I can't seem to get away from food! But since ice cream is one of my favorite things, I have to indulge while I can.
5. Catch fireflies with the kids. Did you know that there are no fireflies in China? Or much of southeast Asia for that matter? Since I grew up with them every night in the summer, I kind of thought that they were everywhere. Huh. . . one of those childhood beliefs proven false.
6. Have at least one park playdate a week. This one is closely tied with #3. And a great need to connect with people I miss.
7. Try to see as much of the Olympics while simultaneously trying to see as little election coverage as possible. Hmm, not sure this one is possible. I have decided that while I firmly believe in being informed about the election and candidates, that the whole election process is a bit better from afar. And we return to O-H-I-O. This one is probably unattainable.
8. Have a date with Andy. And hopefully eat Indian food in Clifton (you Cincy folk know of where I speak). With grandma babysitting. What could be better?
9. Go for morning runs that look more like this
and less like my normal view.
Do I really need to say anymore on that one? And while I won't get to run in the woods every time, even the neighborhoods with the big lawns and trees will be a great change.
10. Go to the grocery store alone. This may seem like an odd one, but I love the grocery store. I enjoy grocery shopping more than shopping for clothes. Well, I should say that I love going to the grocery store in the US. So at least once while I am back I want to wander the aisles and just be able to enjoy grocery shopping again.
So what are your plans and hopes for the summer? I know they will look different than mine, but join me in being intentional about this precious time.
And just in case you were wondering. . .
16 days until we are Stateside. Summer fun, here we come!
