Doing Business....

in China is often done at dinners. While not much business is discussed, the importance is building and maintaining the relationship. Normally, Andy goes to business lunches/dinners, but this time the kids and I were invited as well. Yet again, we got to try a new food. Don't we seem to do a lot of that? We had lobster sashime (raw sushi) but in a presentation that was incredible! In this case, the picture will show you better....

The server put this down, and the lobster was STILL MOVING! The white stuff at the bottom of the plate is the lobster meat. You dip the meat in the small bowl of wasabi and all the while the antennae of the lobster were MOVING. Did I mention that it was MOVING and still SOMEWHAT ALIVE!? But very, very yummy! Becca was a little freaked out by the fact that it moved. She kept asking if it was going to walk around on the table. But after she poked it several times with her chopsticks, she decided that she wasn't worried anymore.
Then after we ate the lobster meat, the dish was whisked away.... but it reappeared later. The lobster was cut up and fried (with the shell still on it). Below is this dish. Finally at the end of the meal, the lobster made its last appearance in a soup. I believe that I have mentioned before that the Chinese waste NOTHING. ;-)

  2. I love Lobster, but don't think I could have done that. Becca was very brave! To poke it and still eat it!

  5. Seriously! I am impressed that you're willing to try half the stuff that you do. I would never try many of the Chinese "delicacies." Fortunately, we were pretty much left alone and didn't have too many formal banquets or things at which we could offend our hosts...

  6. Maybe I should clarify... the lobster wasn't moving on MY plate. Granted it was sitting in the middle of the table MOVING. And the kids didn't try the raw lobster, but Becca did try the 2nd version. Our other 2 were not nearly as brave. I thought it was funny - Becca poked the lobster several times with her chopsticks (at least once in the eye) and then wondered if she needed to clean her chopsticks before eating again. If you got past the fact that it moved, it was REALLY good (just think of it as sushi).
