I have previous experience with cracking eggs into a mixing bowl to find things that look like it might have been a baby chick. I kid you not. I have therefore gotten into the habit of cracking eggs into a separate bowl so I don't have to throw out other ingredients. Just part of the adventure! Yep, didn't you really want to know this?

Weird Eggs
So, it has been awhile since I have had a really good grocery adventure. I am not sure if I am not noticing things as much or just getting used to shopping or what.... Anyway, I went to the grocery store the other day and wanted to buy eggs. I found the package that I wanted, finished my shopping and proceeded to the checkout. At the checkout, the cashier told me that "jidan meiyou piao" (the eggs have no price ticket). I asked her to wait a minute and ran back to the egg section and grabbed another thing of eggs. But when I got to the register, I noticed that one of the eggs in the new batch was cracked. I asked her to scan the one and that I wanted the other (or at least I thought I said and gestured something like that). She just looked at me like I was TOTALLY CRAZY. I tried again with no success. Finally, I just let her scan the new batch. Oh well, I tried. :-) Then I when I got home, I discovered that one egg had a slight crack and another had a hole. Upon further inspection the hole looked like a chick was going to emerge any moment. What do you think?

OK, that just weirds me out. I'm going to have a hard time eating our own eggs here at home!
ReplyDeleteSince I have NEVER had it happen in the US and more than once here, I think that you are safe. :-)
ReplyDeleteBut they do eat baby birds (from the egg)... some were actually brought into Andy's office (it is quite a delicacy). Andy who will eat just about anything drew the line at that one. But then again, some of the Chinese in his office were uncomfortable eating them as well!
wow.....that creeps me out too. that's a secret fear i have when i use eggs....that one will crack open and have...body parts...inside. i should stop reading your blog while i eat lunch.... ha ha... ; )
ReplyDeleteEww! Did you crack it open to investigate what was inside?
ReplyDeletewell, I was planning on doing some investigating, but it got thrown away before I could. I think Andy was concerned that someone would use it by accident.
ReplyDeleteAnother reminder of the adventure you are on. I was relaying this story to Damon and he said the lady was probably thinking-- you could have a baby chick (delicacy) in this batch-- why would you want me to give you that one?
