Rafflesia

Thursday, January 29th (continued - this was a long day)

One interesting thing we learned while on vacation.... Borneo is the home to the largest flower in the world. The rafflesia can be up to 41 inches in diameter and weigh as much as 25 pounds! It is a unique opportunity to see them because the flowers take 15 months to bud and then are only open for 7 days! So when we were on the way back from the canopy walk and Andy saw a sign boasting that there was a rafflesia blooming, he asked the taxi driver to stop. Now I was really not excited about getting out and walking through the rain forest to see this flower. It had been a LONG day and I really just wanted to get back. But I did get out and was glad that I did. There were some entrepreneurs on the side of the road charging (way too much) to see the flowers. We argued over the price a bit but really didn't talk her down. After walking through the jungle, we were treated with not just one but two flowers:

One just about done blooming
And one just opening up

  1. Oh my gosh... those are AMAZING! I check your blog daily. I'm always anxious to see what the next Wilcox adventure will be!

Our house is STILL on the market. Lots of activity, but no offers. Second Open House today... we'll see if this does the trick. ugh! The Schurman's are putting their house on the market this week also. Lots of changes in the 'hood! ;)
